German Jews celebrate beginning of Hanukkah

Germany is celebrating the start of Hanukkah with the lighting of the first candle on a 20-foot (six-meter) tall menorah in front of Berlin's iconic Brandenburg Gate.
Head Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal of the Jewish Education Center Chabad Lubawitsch said Wednesday that the raising a menorah there sets a "tone of light" where there was once the "essence of darkness and evil." The center has held the ceremony there since 2003.
The gate and the square behind the menorah hold special significance for Germany's Jewish community since during the Nazi regime they were bedecked with massive Nazi banners and were the scene of anti-Semitic rallies.
Hanukkah is an eight-day celebration of the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the second century B.C. It begins this year on Wednesday at sundown.
