Taipei City: Man arrested for throwing eggs at Korean school

A 53-year-old man was arrested today for throwing eggs at the Korean Elementary School in Taipei, according to police.

Police arrested the man, surnamed Chien, today morning as he stood outside the school in Taipei City's Wanhua District throwing eggs through the school gate.

He confessed at the Wanhua Police Department that he was irate at South Korea over the disqualification of Taiwanese taekwondo athlete last week at the Asian

Games in Guangzhou, China.

In Taiwan, anger has been directed at South Korea because two of the main figures in the incident were Korean or of Korean descent.

Chien said the egg-throwing was not directed at Korean school children and that he never thought of hurting them.

He admitted that he also threw eggs at the Taipei Korean School Saturday, which promoted the Taipei police to deploy additional personnel at the school.

The man could face defamation charges if the school sues him.

Today's egg-throwing incident was the latest of a series of anti-Korea actions by Taiwanese, who have accused South Korean officials at the games of treating

Taiwan taekwondo star Yang Shu-chun unfairly.

Yang, who was one of Taiwan's leading contenders for a gold medal at the Asian Games, was disqualified Nov. 17 during the opening bout in the women's under 49

kg. division on grounds that she was using extra sensors on her electronic socks to increase her chances of winning.

Video footage of the match revealed, however, that the sensors were not attached to her socks during the bout against a Vietnamese opponent.
