Nigeria: Shell pipeline damage in oil-rich delta

Royal Dutch Shell PLC's Nigerian subsidiary says one of its pipelines running through the oil-rich and restive Niger Delta has been damaged.
A Shell spokesman told The Associated Press on Friday that the company's Nigerian subsidiary declared "force majeure" on its Bonny Light crude oil shipments. The term is used when it is impossible for an oil company to cover the promised supply from the field.
The damage occurred on Shell's Trans Niger pipeline, a major conduit for Shell through the Niger Delta, an oil-rich region of swamps, mangroves and creeks almost the size of South Carolina.
The spokesman says an investigation is ongoing into the cause of the damage. It comes as the region's main militant group has promised new attacks.
