European medical group pledges to assist Taiwan in joining the world body

A Taiwanese-European medical group pledged yesterday to help Taiwan pursue its goal of joining the World Health Organization.
At a board meeting held in Bern, Switzerland, the European Federation of Taiwan Health Alliance elaborated a plan to support Taiwan's bid to attend as an observer the gathering of the World Health Assembly - the WHO's decision-making body - to be held in Geneva in mid May.
Under the plan, the EFTHA will write to the health ministers of the European Union member states to appeal for their support for Taiwan's WHO bid.
The alliance will also increase its contacts with medical groups in European nations, making them aware of the importance of Taiwan's participation in the WHO.
The EFTHA also decided to hold a news conference April 7 in Brussels to call for international support for Taiwan's WHO bid.
It will also join groups from Taiwan in Geneva in mid May to conduct lobbying activities and stage demonstrations to appeal for international support for Taiwan's WHO bid in line with this year's World Health Assembly which opens May 16.
Speaking at the meeting, Wang Shih-rong (王世榕), Taiwan's representative in Switzerland, thanked the Taiwanese expatriates for their support for Taiwan's efforts to participate in international activities.
