Rivals reaffirm commitment to Sudan referendum

Rival officials reaffirmed their commitment to holding a crucial referendum on Jan. 9 on whether southern Sudan will become independent or remain in a united Sudan.
Sudan's Foreign Minister Ali Ahmed Karti and Pagan Amun, secretary general of the south's ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement, also reaffirmed to the U.N. Security Council Tuesday that the north and the south will accept the results of the vote.
African Union envoy Thabo Mbeki said Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir and Southern Sudan's President Salva Kiir would meet next week to try to resolve differences on holding a separate referendum to decide whether the oil-rich Abyei region will be part of the north or a possible new country in the south.
