MAC releases commercial for 'new cross-strait ties'

The Mainland Affairs Council released an infomercial yesterday urging China to work with Taiwan to overcome their mutual obstacles to make way for "new cross-Taiwan Strait relations."
The 30-second film, titled "New Year, New Cross-Strait Relations" will be aired on major TV networks in Taiwan from yesterday, according to the MAC.
With no narration, the film is presented with a subtitle reading "unconditional, practical, put disputes aside, respect each other" and images of two drivers together braving a storm to remove a fallen tree that blocks their way.
MAC Vice Chairman Chiu Tai-san said both Taiwan and China are well aware of the fact that it will be impossible to achieve a mutually acceptable resolution to their political disputes in the near future.
Therefore, like the two drivers who remove the barricade, both sides should think of a way to bypass their disputes, Chiu said.
Chiu urged the Beijing authorities to cherish the present "amiable" cross-strait atmosphere, seek to reopen cross-strait negotiations and dialogue and abandon their plan to enact an "anti-secession law," so as not to miss the opportunity of peace.
The infomercial was released after special cross-strait Lunar New Year charter flights were launched last week.
Sun Yafu, vice president of mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Strait, and ARATS Secretary-General Li Yafei also visited Taiwan earlier this week to attend a memorial service for late Straits Exchange Foundation Chairman Koo Chen-fu (辜振甫).
Both developments are considered by Taiwan as signs of cross-strait relations tempering after tensions over the past few years.
