Groups urge UN not to forget Darfur

International humanitarian groups are urging the U.N. Security Council not to ignore human rights issues or the conflict-ridden western region of Darfur during its debate this week on a referendum that could split Africa's largest county in two if southern Sudan secedes.
Representatives of the international organizations Oxfam and World Vision, as well as Human Rights Watch, told reporters Monday they worry about ongoing attacks on Darfur civilians, access of humanitarian aid to conflict regions, and protections of civil and political rights during the vote.
The Security Council on Tuesday will discuss the Jan. 9 referendum that could decide whether southern Sudan should be independent. Voter registration began this week.
