Tiger Woods opened his title defense at the Australian Masters with a 2-under 69 Thursday, leaving him four shots behind the early starters at Victoria Golf Club.
Woods hit the ball as well as he has all year, except when he got on the greens. He took 19 putts on his opening nine holes, two of those coming on the par-5 17th when he reached in two with a blistering tee shot and a 2-iron to 30 feet.
Alistair Presnell and Adam Bland each had a 6-under 65.
This is the last time Woods is defending a title this year. He won the Australian Masters a year ago at Kingston Heath, just 12 days before a car accident outside his Florida home led to revelations of infidelity.
