Money to help tens of thousands of villagers displaced by a deadly volcano will run out soon unless the government declares a natural disaster.
Djarot Nugroho, a top disaster management official, said Wednesday there are only enough funds to support refugees for another five days.
He spoke hours after Mount Merapi erupted with its biggest blast yet, shooting searing ash miles (kilometers) into the air and sending panicked refugees fleeing from camps near the base.
No new casualties were reported immediately after the booming explosion.
More than 70,000 villagers have been evacuated from the 9,700-foot (3,000-meter) Mount Merapi's once-fertile slopes since it began erupting just over a week ago.
