Portuguese Parliament to endorse austerity plan

Portugal's Parliament is set to approve a government austerity plan which aims to restore market confidence in one of the eurozone's most indebted countries.
The center-left Socialist government plans to introduce tax hikes, steep curbs in expenditure and public sector pay cuts next year, despite an outcry from trade unions which have called a general strike for Nov. 24.
The main opposition Social Democratic Party says it will allow the plan to pass by abstaining from a parliamentary vote on the proposals Wednesday.
Its abstention means the minority government will have a majority of votes _ enough to ensure approval of the measures, which are part of the 2011 state budget.
