5 killed in Philippine landslide set off by rain

An army officer says five people have died in a landslide set off by four days of heavy rains that flooded several villages in the northern Philippines.
Regional army spokesman Lt. Col. Loreto Magundayao said the dead included four children who were hit by the landslide Thursday in a farming village in Isabela province.
Magundayao says floodwaters, worsened by the release of water from a dam, have swept away houses. Villagers have climbed onto their roofs in swamped communities to await rescuers.
The rains eased Thursday after about 1,000 villagers fled to safety in Isabela. The province also was buffeted by powerful Typhoon Megi last month.
