UK Treasury reveals 2011 budget date, defends cuts

British Treasury chief George Osborne has named March 23 as the date for the country's annual budget and has defended the government's plans to slash public spending.
Osborne revealed the date on Thursday while giving evidence to a Parliamentary committee about the impact of harsh spending cuts introduced by the government last month to slash Britain's large budget deficit.
Osborne is backing the plans to slash 81 billion pounds ($128 billion) from public expenditure over the next four years against claims by the Public Accounts Committee that the savings will rely on cutting crucial frontline services.
The Conservative-led coalition gave an emergency budget in June, fulfilling a campaign pledge to do so within 50 days of being elected on May 5.
