Sehwag century lights up Ahmedabad test match

Opener Virender Sehwag struck an unbeaten century Thursday to help India dominate the first two sessions of the first cricket test against New Zealand.
India reached 243 for one at tea with Sehwag batting on 152 and Rahul Dravid on 61.
It was the 22nd test hundred for Sehwag, who settled in immediately after India elected to bat at the Sardar Patel Stadium.
Sehwag, who was involved in an unbroken 183-run partnership for the second wicket with Dravid, has so far struck 22 fours and a six in a 172-ball innings.
Dravid has struck nine fours off 162 balls.
Jesse Ryder was the only successful bowler for New Zealand, bowling Gautam Gambhir for 21 with the total at 60 in the first session.
Sehwag timed the ball well from early on, taking three fours through the off side against Chris Martin in the third over.
He welcomed first-change bowler Ryder with a lofted four over mid-on and smashed him straight down the ground for another boundary off the next delivery. A drive through the cover region off Jeetan Patel took him to his 50.
He slowed a little when approaching triple figures but reached it with a characteristic lofted shot for four over mid-off from Daniel Vettori.
Sehwag had a reprieve from off-spinner Patel, who failed to latch on to an easy return catch when the batsman was on 144.
Dravid also had a lucky break when he was dropped on 28 by wicketkeeper Gareth Hopkin off Ryder.
India, boosted by the return of Gambhir and VVS Laxman, had to drop Cheteshwar Pujara and Murali Vijay, who contributed in a test win over Australia at Bangalore last month.
Skipper Vettori, playing his 100th test for New Zealand, is the only one in his side to have played a test in India before. The inexperienced side also has two players making their debuts _ batsman Kane Williamson and pace bowler Hamish Bennett.
Top-ranked India is the favorite in the three-test series, having just beaten Australia 2-0 in a two-test home series. Hyderabad and Nagpur will host the remaining two matches.
