Russian, Afghan leaders discuss combating drugs

The Kremlin says the Russian and Afghan presidents have agreed to develop cooperation in the fight against drugs.
Dmitry Medvedev's phone conversation with Afghanistan's Hamid Karzai on Wednesday comes a week after a drug raid conducted jointly by U.S., Afghan and Russian agents near the border with Pakistan.
Karzai complained over the weekend that he hadn't been informed in advance of Russian participation in the NATO-led drug raid that netted $56 million worth of heroin and morphine, and his administration demanded a formal apology from the alliance.
The Kremlin said in a statement that Karzai called for closer cooperation with Russian in a call to Medvedev. It said the presidents noted that drug bust as the first example of cooperation in fighting drugs between Afghan, Russian and U.S. forces.
