Exhibition brings ancient Book of the Dead to life

A new exhibition brings to life the Book of the Dead, the ancient Egyptian guide to navigating the afterlife.
The British Museum show explains that the book is not a single volume, but a series of spells and illustrations inked onto papyrus scrolls.
The scrolls were designed to help the departed overcome obstacles in the netherworld, including fires, snakes and ravenous beasts.
The exhibition brings together treasures from the museum's collection of Egyptian artifacts, including fragile papyrus scrolls that are rarely shown in public.
Curator John Taylor said Tuesday that the exhibition shows the ancient Egyptians were not obsessed with death, but with life, which they hoped would continue in the spirit world.
The exhibition runs Thursday to March 6.
