East African companies highlight trade obstacles

A regional private sector organization says East African governments are frustrating their efforts at expanding business following the formation of a common market four months ago.
The East African Business Council said in a statement Wednesday that companies have been forced to pay illegal fees to transport their goods. The council said other frustrations include poor coordination at border points that have forced businesses to go through repeated checks that slow down trade.
Jean Bosco Barege of Burundi's East African Community Affairs Ministry says Burundi is working to simplify its clearance procedures at its borders.
The East African Community is a five-nation bloc that formed a common market in July.
