A strong earthquake has hit eastern Indonesia after a volcano in the seismically active country had its biggest eruption yet.
The U.S. Geological Survey said Wednesday's quake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.1. It hit off Papua province some 18 miles (29 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor. No damage or injuries were immediately reported and no tsunami warning was issued.
Indonesia rests on a series of fault lines that make the sprawling archipelago nation one of the most earthquake-prone in the world.
An explosive eruption of Mount Merapi on Wednesday afternoon lasted more than an hour. It prompted evacuations of new villages and refugee camps of people who fled when the volcano started erupting a week ago.
