Brazil defeats Italy at volleyball worlds in Japan

Olympic champion Brazil defeated Italy 25-16, 25-19, 25-7 at the women's volleyball world championship on Wednesday to finish the first round undefeated.
Natalia Pereira led the way with 25 points as the Brazilians improved to 5-0 in Group D. European champion Italy dropped to 3-2.
Brazil, the Netherlands, Italy and the Czech Republic all advanced from Group B to play in the second round, which begins on Saturday in Nagoya.
In Group C, the United States defeated Cuba 30-28, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 to remain undefeated at 5-0. Destinee Hooker scored a team-high 20 points and Logan Tom added 19 for the Americans.
