Acer Inc., the world's second-largest PC brand, announced a plan today to set up a second base in China, in the southwestern city of Chongqing, joining an array of high-tech companies with a presence there.

Acer believes that the center will help it enhance its competitiveness and move further toward its goal of becoming the world's No. 1 PC brand, a position currently held by Hewlett-Packard (HP).

HP has already set up a presence in the city where a cluster of high-tech companies is emerging due to the Chinese government's efforts to boost development in the area.

Acer already has a foothold in Shanghai.

The company will use Chongqing as another global manufacturing center in the future, according to a company statement.

Acer will sign an agreement with the Chongqing City government over the establishment of the new base in early December after completing an assessment of the local infrastructure that has lasted for more than six months.
