Ex-UN envoy: time to accept Taliban peace talks

Former U.N. envoy Kai Eide says it's time to accept that negotiations with Taliban leaders are needed to restore peace in Afghanistan.
Eide told AP in an interview Tuesday that a window of opportunity could open during the winter months, when there is normally a reduction in military activity.
Eide said ending the nearly decade-old war won't be possible unless the Taliban are included in reconciliation efforts.
He criticized President Barack Obama's plan to start withdrawing U.S. troops in July 2011, saying "it stimulated the insurgency."
The Norwegian diplomat served as the top U.N. official in Afghanistan for two years, until March. He is releasing a book about his experiences this week in Norway.
