Israeli politician cancels visit to Britain

A British group says an Israeli politician has canceled a visit to London over fears he might be arrested on suspicion of committing war crimes.
Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Dan Meridor had been due to give a speech Monday organized by the Britain and Israel Communications and Research Center, a pro-Israel group.
Its chief executive, Lorna Fitzsimons, said Tuesday that "Israeli law officers did not think they should take the risk of allowing him to come."
Several Israeli officials have been threatened with legal action in Britain under the principle of "universal jurisdiction," which contends that crimes against humanity can be prosecuted even if they were committed elsewhere.
No one has been arrested but the campaign has strained ties between Britain and Israel.
