New Western Sahara talks scheduled Nov. 8-9

New Western Sahara talks scheduled Nov. 8-9

The United Nations says a new round of informal talks with Morocco and the Polisario Front on the disputed Western Sahara will be held Nov. 8-9.
U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky announced the talks Tuesday following a visit to the region by U.N. special envoy Christopher Ross and informal meetings with both sides.
Nesirky said the U.N. hopes the upcoming meeting in Manhasset, New York, "will be productive and will allow the parties to move beyond the impasse" on the future of the north African territory.
Morocco has proposed wide-ranging autonomy for Western Sahara, which it took over in 1979 when Mauritania pulled out, but the pro-independence Polisario Front insists on a referendum on the territory's future.
