Austria students protest plan to cut benefits

Thousands of Austrian students have demonstrated against a government plan that would indirectly reduce their benefits by scaling back family allowances.
Currently, families with students aged 19 to 26 get roughly (EURO)150 ($207.86) a month from the state. But under a new federal budget plan, the payment will end at age 24.
Police said over 1,000 demonstrators marched in protest Thursday from Vienna university to the square in front of the chancellor's office, while organizers said up to 20,000 turned out.
The proposed cutback is part of a government austerity plan foreseeing spending cuts of (EURO)1.6 billion ($2.22 billion) for 2011.
