The U.N. anti-corruption chief says more cross-border cooperation is needed to effectively fight organized crime.
Yury Fedotov, head of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, said Monday the threat posed by criminal networks to global security and development has "ballooned" and that there is "a very clear need" for states to work together to tackle the trafficking of people, goods, firearms and drugs.
He says that no matter how powerful a country is, it cannot cope with the threat of organized crime alone.
Fedotov spoke on the first day of a conference dedicated to shoring up support for a U.N. convention aimed at crippling criminal groups.
