BlackBerry wins UAE reprieve; looming ban halted

The United Arab Emirates says it won't go ahead with a planned ban on key BlackBerry services slated to begin Monday.
The Gulf state's telecommunication regulator said in a message Friday carried by state news agency WAM that "all BlackBerry services ... will continue to operate as normal" beyond the pending October 11 cutoff date.
It was not immediately clear whether the reprieve for BlackBerry maker Research in Motion was permanent.
Emirati authorities had threatened to shut off BlackBerry messaging, e-mail and Web browsing services partly because of security concerns. It would have affected 500,000 users locally and any outsiders using the smart phones in the Middle East business hub.
