US state Ohio breaks its lethal injections record

Ohio on Wednesday executed a man for killing his girlfriend, setting a new state record for lethal injections carried out in a year.
Convicted murderer Michael Benge was the eighth person executed in the Midwestern state this year. Ohio carried out its previous high of seven lethal injections in 2004.
Ohio is still second to Texas, which has executed 16 people so far in 2010, all by lethal injection, according to statistics from the Death Penalty Information Center. Alabama, with four executions according to the center's database, is third.
Ohio's all-time execution record occurred in 1949, when 15 men were executed in the electric chair. The state resumed capital punishment in 1999 after a long moratorium.
Benge, 49, was executed for bludgeoning his girlfriend, Judith Gabbard, to death and then using her bank card to get money for crack cocaine.
