Spanish coal miners call strike

A Spanish union says coal miners will go on strike after talks with the government failed to resolve a dispute over aid to their beleaguered industry and unpaid wages.
Victor Fernandez of the General Workers Union says the strike will be staged over four days: Sept. 22, 23, 29 and 30. The date of the 29th coincides with a nationwide general strike against government austerity measures and labor market reforms.
The miners' main demand is that the government provide subsidies to utilities so they will use Spanish as opposed to imported coal, which is sometimes cheaper.
Fernandez spoke Thursday to The Associated Press from inside the Spanish Industry Ministry, where he and five union colleagues are staging a sit-in after the failed talks with the minister, Miguel Sebastian.
