Turkey: Scrutiny falls on 1980 coup leaders

A leading Turkish lawmaker says the leaders of a 1980 military coup should be brought to trial following approval of constitutional amendments that lifted immunity for them.
Omer Celik, vice chairman of the ruling Justice and Development Party, said Wednesday that the coup leaders were a "gang of murderers" who committed a crime against humanity.
The leader of the coup, Kenan Evren, presided over passage of a constitution. Turks voted to amended it Sunday. The retired general is 93 and ailing.
The generals intervened after years of civil strife. Executions, torture, and disappearances occurred under their command.
Several groups have filed petitions calling for the prosecution of the coup leaders.
