Electronic industry alone isn’t enough to save Taiwan’s economy: Academia Sinica

Academia Sinica President Wong Chi-hui yesterday criticized that Taiwan government had been relied on electronic industry for economic development for past fifty years but failed to create continual economic growth in a seminar.

Wong reportedly said that OEM-oriented commercial model “wouldn’t lead to sustainable development,” according to the local media report Sunday.

He further pointed out that the challenge faces Taiwan today is to develop six new industries; promote the additional value of service industry; and to cultivate talents accordingly in the speech delivered yesterday.

Cultivating talents and develop basic studies are of essential importance, said Wong. He suggested that Taiwan develop research-oriented industry such as medication, pointing out that health sector worth a production value of US$6,000 billion.

In response, Ministry of Finance vice minister said that there’s no shortcut for the development of new industry, and that’s what the ministry’s long-term plan.
