Iceland lawmakers mull financial crisis charges

A group of Icelandic lawmakers will soon recommend whether the nation's former leaders should be prosecuted for their role in Iceland's spectacular financial meltdown of 2008.
The lawmakers' decision on Saturday will determine whether Iceland's parliament will vote on the issue, and possibly bring charges of negligence against former Prime Minister Geir Haarde and two other ex-Cabinet ministers.
If charged, the three former ministers would face a special constitutional court in the North Atlantic island nation.
Iceland's economy was brought to the brink of collapse in the early days of the world financial downturn, and a report submitted to parliament this year blamed the ex-ministers for turning a blind eye to warning signs.
