Poll: Brazil's ruling-party candidate well ahead

A new poll shows the candidate backed by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is in a position to win presidential elections in Latin America's biggest nation.
The Datafolha polling institute says Dilma Rousseff of the Workers' Party is favored by 50 percent of those surveyed ahead of the Oct. 3 election, while Jose Serra of the centrist Brazilian Social Democracy Party is supported by 27 percent. The difference would be enough to give Rousseff a victory without the need for a runoff.
The third-place candidate in the poll is Marina Silva of the Green Party, with 11 percent.
Datafolha interviewed nearly 12,000 people Wednesday and Thursday. The survey was published Saturday, and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
