Tainan magistrate hopes to open fruit-marketing channels in China

Beijing, Sept. 11 (CNA) Tainan Magistrate Su Huan-chih arrived in Beijing Saturday for a visit during which he hosted a charity sale of Taiwan-grown pomelos, and said he hopes to open direct sales channels in China for Taiwanese fruit.
It was Su's second visit to China within three months following an earlier trip to Shanghai and Beijing in June during which he promoted mangoes grown in his southern county.
Su said he hoped to help open long-term direct sales channels for high-quality Taiwanese agricultural products in China before he completes his tenure as county chief late this year.
He said Taiwan must find ways into the China market for its premium agricultural products, which he said is the only way for Taiwanese farmers to see viable profits in China.
Therefore, he went on, his office is currently in talks with major department stores in Beijing in the hope that they will agree to set up counters for selling Taiwanese fruit direct to local consumers.
Su brought with him nine different Taiwanese fruits to Beijing, including pomelos and starfruit from Tainan, custard apples from Taitung County, milk guavas from Kaohsiung County and bellfruit from Pingtung County.
