Argentinian film wins 'Queer' Golden Lion

"En el Futuro" (In the Future) by Argentinian director Mauro Andrizzi won the Queer Golden Lion on Friday for its "straightforward, sincere" portrayal of gay love, said organizer Marco Busato.
"It was a simple love story, very refreshing and a pleasure," Busato said of the film, the fourth recipient of the award since it was established in 2007 on the margins of the Venice film festival. The "quite experimental" work is part fiction and part documentary, Busato told reporters.
The gay couple featured in the film are "absolutely normal, not even gorgeous, a middle-aged couple," he said, adding that the depiction of their relationship was "very naturalistic."
"The story was very funny and very true," he added of the film, which was screened in the festival's Orizzonti sidebar. "Drei," a German film in the main competition about a bisexual love triangle, initially seemed like a "shoo-in" for the Queer Golden Lion, Busato said. "But in the end it had more to do with the concepts of life and death instead of gay thematics," he said, adding that the jury felt the message of the film "was too simplistic." "En el Futuro" was cited for "dealing with the universe of feelings with honesty and simplicity, managing to show their unique peculiarities."
