Tax-free imports for charity guide dogs

Tax-free imports for charity guide dogs

Taipei, Sept. 11 (CNA) Guide dogs imported for the use of the underprivileged have been granted duty-free privileges, the Department of Customs Administration (DOCA) under the Ministry of Finance said Saturday.
Citing an application by the Taiwan Guide Dog Association to import guide dogs, the department stated that the organization recently received an exemption of tariff at 12.5 percent and business tax of 5 percent on the import of a mature guide dog, saving a total of NT$3,000 (US$94).
Department officials explained that the association is devoted to establishing a guide dog system in Taiwan and that aside from training guide dogs, it also offers free guide dogs to blind people.
Because it is classed as a charity, the association is given tax-free treatment, the same as that applied to the import of commodities for relief purposes, the officials said.
Government units and charity groups that import goods to help the sick, the poor and those with physical or mental disabilities are entitled to duty-free privileges, according to the DOCA.
The department added that it might expand the tax-free policy to cover imports used for rescue missions such as machinery and tools.
