Lebedev wins gold for Russia at wrestling worlds

Victor Lebedev of Russia captured his first major title Friday, winning gold in the men's freestyle 55-kilogram class at the world wrestling championships.
Lebedev defeated Toghrul Asgarov of Azerbaijan 1-0, 0-3, 1-0.
"This time I felt myself more confident at the worlds," said Lebedev, who won a bronze medal last season. "When I won in the semifinals I promised myself that I will win the gold."
Lebedev's medal was only the second gold for Russia after five days of the competition.
Yashiro Inaba of Japan took bronze after pinning Naranbaatar Bayaraa of Mongolia in the second period of the third-place bout. Another bronze went to Frank Chamizo-Marquez of Cuba, who topped Kim Huo-sub of South Korea 1-0, 2-3, 5-1.
In the women's 67-kilogram class, Martine Dugrenier of Canada rallied to beat Elena Shalygina of Kazakhstan 0-2, 6-0, 7-0 for her second straight championship title.
"It's the second time that I had to defend my title," Dugreiner said. "It's a lot of pressure, but I think I did quite good overall. I lost the first period but I was able to adapt and recover the lost ground."
Ifeoma Iheanacho of Nigeria won her first career major bronze medal, pinning Mami Shinkai of Japan just two seconds into the second period for a 5-0 win. Another bronze went to Alla Cherkasova of Ukraine.
Stanka Hristova of Bulgaria wrapped up the women's competition, winning gold in the 72-kilogram class.
Hristova, a Beijing Olympics silver medalist and two-time world champion, defeated Ohenewa Akuffo of Canada 1-0, 1-0.
Ekaterina Bukina of Russia and Kyoko Hamaguchi of Japan won bronze medals.
Six more men's freestyle events will be held through the weekend.
