England striker Wayne Rooney and his wife say they have endured an "extremely painful" week following tabloid reports about the player's alleged infidelities.
Several tabloid newspapers claimed on Sunday that Rooney cheated repeatedly on his then-pregnant wife last year with a prostitute.
In their first public statement since the allegations emerged, the Rooneys said that "the last six days have been extremely painful for us and for our families."
They added that "it is impossible for us, as it would be for any family, to attempt to resolve any issues in the current media glare."
The Rooneys, who have been married for two years, asked for "the right of our family to discuss these matters in private."
