Obama says he'll stay engaged in Mideast talks

President Barack Obama says he is encouraging peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians because the alternative is a status quo that puts both parties _ and the United States _ at risk.
Obama told a White House news conference Friday that he knows the talks begun this month will be difficult. But he says the Israeli and Palestinian leaders know they need a deal, and that they need one another.
Obama says the United States will stay engaged in the negotiations, including a visit to the region by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton next week.
The U.S.-backed talks have set a goal of establishing an independent Palestinian state within one year.
