French unions: Extend strikes over retirement age

Two French unions of train drivers are calling for an open-ended strike to increase pressure on President Nicolas Sarkozy over plans to raise the retirement age.
Leading unions are planning a one-day strike Sept. 23 to follow up on a strike and protests Tuesday that brought more than 1 million to the streets.
However, some unions want an extendable strike.
Eric Falempin, secretary-general of the Force Ouvriere rail drivers union, said Friday his union wants an open-ended strike starting Sept. 23. The Sud-Rail union announced similar plans.
Other train driver unions and Paris transit driver unions are considering whether to follow suit.
Sarkozy's government wants to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62 in a reform to the money-losing pension system.
