Canadian jobless rate edges up to 8.1 percent

Canada added 35,800 jobs in August but the country's jobless rate increased as more people looked for work.
Statistics Canada said Friday said the unemployment rate increased one-tenth of a point to 8.1 percent. It's the first time the unemployment rate has been above eight per cent since May.
The government agency says monthly gains in employment averaged 13,000 in July and August, compared with an average monthly increase of 51,000 during the first six months of the year.
Last week, Canada reported that the country's gross domestic product rose 2 percent in the second quarter, down from 5.8 percent growth in the first quarter.
Canada withstood the global economic crisis better than most developed countries.
