Romanian media owner arrested for helping convict

One of Romania's most influential media owners is arrested on allegations he aided a man convicted in the collapse of an investment scheme.
Prosecutors have arrested Sorin Ovidiu Vantu, who owns Realitatea TV news channel, early Friday for 29 days pending an investigation.
He is charged with helping Nicolae Popa leave Romania illegally before he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for fraud, and giving him financial aid while he was abroad.
Some critics claim the case, which dominated all the news is politically motivated to distract from the country's deep eceonomic problems. Vantu is often criticized by President Traian Basescu, and Vantu's news channel reports critically on the government.
The government says it is tackling endemic corruption.
