TSMC August sales hit record high

Taipei, Sept. 10 (CNA) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
(TSMC), the world's largest contract chipmaker, said Friday it broke its own single month record in August with sales of NT$37.39 billion (US$1.17 billion), an increase of 0.5 percent from the previous month.
The August figure was a 25.4 percent increase year-on-year, the company said.
However, the month-on-month growth continued to shrink from 4.4 percent in June and 2.4 percent in July, it said.
"To my knowledge, TSMC has been at full production capacity, " Grand Cathay Securities analyst Mars Hsu said. "It is not easy for the company to raise output to boost sales in a big way." In the first eight months of the year, TSMC posted NT$271.76 billion in sales, up 55.5 percent year-on-year.
However, Hsu said the world's foundry business may have hit a peak and is expected to slow down, as global demand for high tech products is on the decline.
"I do not expect TSMC to continue at full production capacity into the fourth quarter," Hsu said.
Rival United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) posted NT$10.89 billion in sales for August, up 0.59 percent from July. However, its month-on-month growth also shrank from the 4.7 percent recorded in July.
Market observers had said that in the fourth quarter, growing inventories in the downstream electronics sector are expected to affect the upstream segment, including the foundry business, with TSMC and UMC likely to see falling revenue.
