Former China Mobile executive to face prosecution

A former top executive of China Mobile Ltd., the world's biggest phone carrier, was handed over to prosecutors to face charges of taking bribes, state radio reported Friday.
Zhang Chunjiang, a prominent figure in China's state-owned phone industry, was dismissed as deputy general manager of China Mobile in January for unspecified financial irregularities.
Zhang, also the company's former Communist Party boss, was expelled from the ruling party, the state radio said on its website. That strips him of possible protection as a member of the political elite.
The report said Zhang was accused of selling favors and receiving "a huge amount of bribes." It gave no other details.
Chronic corruption is fueling public anger that communist leaders have warned could erode the party's grip on power. Thousands of government and party figures are punished every year for corruption, and some are executed, but authorities have given no indication whether the problem is abating.
Zhang is also a former chairman of China Netcom Ltd.
An influential Chinese business magazine, Caijing, said in January that Zhang was suspected of concealing losses ahead of a 2008 merger with rival China Unicom Ltd. But Friday's report made no mention of such accusations.
