Protesters in South Korea's capital tried to burn the Japanese flag in a show of anger over Japan's renewed claim to islets at the center of a long-running territorial dispute between the neighbors.
About 100 South Koreans rallied outside the Japanese Embassy on Friday over the islets, called Dokdo in Korean and Takeshima in Japanese.
Earlier, Japan's government issued an annual defense report describing the islets, which are under South Korean control and located about halfway between the countries, as an "integral" part of Japanese territory.
South Korea's Foreign Ministry demanded that Japan withdraw the latest claim.
