2 Guinea election officials charged with fraud

The director of planning of Guinea's election commission says he and the head of the election body have been charged with fraud in a court proceeding that not even their lawyers were invited to attend.
The election commission's Director of Planning El Haj Boubacar Diallo told The Associated Press by phone that he was shocked to hear on the radio Thursday that he and Commission President Ben Sekou Sylla have been sentenced to one year in jail for alleged fraud during the first round of the presidential election in June.
Diallo says he called the country's chief prosecutor who confirmed to him that he had been sentenced.
The election officials were accused of fraud by candidate Alpha Conde and their sentencing is bound to increase tensions before the Sept. 19 run-off.
