UN `acknowledges' court ruling on Kosovo

UN `acknowledges' court ruling on Kosovo

The U.N. General Assembly has adopted a watered-down resolution by acclamation which "acknowledges" an international court ruling that Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia was legal.
Serbia had introduced a resolution to the 192-member world body stating "that unilateral secession is not a way to achieve statehood or to resolve territorial disputes." But it was unacceptable to many countries in the European Union and the United States which have recognized Kosovo's independence.
The resolution adopted Thursday was the result of a compromise forged by the 27-member EU and Serbia. It was adopted after a 2 1/2 hour debate on where Kosovo should be seated in the assembly chamber.
Serbia called its text "neutral" on the status issue.
