France's immigration minister is saying that France will continue to expel Gypsies, calling the expulsions "voluntary repatriations."
Eric Besson says a European Parliament resolution Thursday that criticized France for its expulsions of Gypsies or Roma was "a political measure."
He was speaking Thursday after meeting Romanian officials to discuss the expulsions of 1,000 Gypsies, many of them Romanian citizens who lack work or residency papers. The expulsions are part of a tightening of security by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
The tactics have drawn criticism from several quarters, including the Roman Catholic Church. Many at the EU parliament accused Paris of targeting Roma as a group, contravening essential European human rights.
