Merkel: economic upswing should benefit workers

Germany's chancellor says the current economic upswing is expected to benefit workers who were hit by the economic and financial crisis.
Angela Merkel told journalists on Thursday in Berlin that employees who made sacrifices during the crisis, such as accepting reduced work hours, should not be disappointed as the economy recovers.
But Merkel, speaking alongside the head of Germany's labor union federation, Michael Sommer, cautions the upswing is "still very fragile."
The chancellor says the challenge is to safeguard existing jobs and create more positions. Her meeting with Sommer comes ahead of a series of wage negotiations this fall.
Germany's central bank forecasts Europe's biggest economy to grow by about 3 percent in 2010.
