Magnitude-5.3 earthquake strikes off Taiwan east coast

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A magnitude-5.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Northeast Taiwan’s Ilan County Sunday at 9:03 p.m., the Central Weather Bureau said. No damage or casualties were immediately reported.
The epicenter was located under the ocean 69.2 kilometers southeast from the town of Nan’ao in Ilan County at a depth of 15.4 kilometers, the bureau said.
In Nan’ao, the quake registered an intensity of 3, with 2 registered in Ilan City, Hoping in Hualien County and Wufenshan in the Taipei area.
Earthquakes frequently strike under the Pacific off Taiwan’s east coast.
The most serious tremor in the country’s recent history occurred in 1999, when about 2,400 people were killed after a magnitude-7.3 quake struck near the Nantou County town of Chichi on September 21.
