A French regional security official says four people have been detained on suspicion of having opened fire on police officers during recent clashes between youths and police in Grenoble.
Brigitte Jullien says seven others were also detained for carrying illegal weapons or objects that could be used as projectiles. The suspects were taken into custody early Sunday.
Clashes broke out Friday night in the southeastern French city of Grenoble after a local resident suspected in the armed robbery of a casino was killed while fleeing police.
Rampaging youth torched about 60 cars overnight Friday and shot at police. No one was injured.
Rioting continued on a lesser scale overnight Saturday. Some 15 cars were burned, local officials said. No injuries were reported.
