Taiwan defeats Japan in opener of Pony League regional tourney

Taipei, July 18 (CNA) Taiwan defeated Japan 5-0 on the first day of the Pony League Asia-Pacific Zone tournament in Taipei Sunday, a good first step in Taiwan's campaign to earn a berth at the Pony League World Series.
Competing under the official name of Chinese Taipei, Taiwan scored a run in the bottom of the second inning when cleanup hitter Ho Chi-wei walked, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an infield out.
Taiwan added two more runs in the third inning and one each in the fourth and fifth to win comfortably in the seven inning contest.
Japan managed four hits but failed to score. Taiwan knew the Japanese would be aggressive on the basepaths, and catcher Wang Chien-hao was well prepared, throwing out all four opposing runners who tried to steal a base.
Taiwan's manager Chang Cheng-nan said his team executed the game plan well but did not unleash the full power of its attack because his hitters' rhythm was disrupted by the agonizingly slow motion of Japan's starting pitcher.
Taiwan is one of seven teams competing in the Asia-Pacific Zone tournament. It is grouped with Japan, Indonesia and Vietnam in Group A, while South Korea, Hong Kong and the Philippines form Group B.
The top two teams in each group, will enter the semifinal round.
The winner of the tournament will head to the Pony League World Series in the United States.
The strongest team in Group B, South Korea, defeated the Philippines 11-1 on Sunday.
